“Do you have anything more luxurious?”
One day, a man came into the salon to buy a gift voucher for his dad.
I suggested a spa pedicure without polish, or perhaps a herbal foot massage. He listened, then asked, with such a hopeful expression:
“Do you have anything more luxurious?”
Our herbal foot massage had been available for about a year and a half and was well liked, though it still hadn’t made its way onto our printed price list. We would usually help customers choose between that and a spa pedicure without polish. We hadn’t offered the two together before.
But he wanted something extra-special for his dad. So we talked through what we could include and put together a Herbal Spa Pedicure, without polish.
Our gift vouchers usually carry a dollar amount. On this one, I wrote out the treatment we had arranged.
When he left, he had such a playful, delighted look on his face—as though he could already picture his dad’s surprise.
Afterwards, another thought came to me.
What if his dad arrived, looked at the price list and couldn’t find his gift there? For someone who rarely visits a salon, asking might not feel easy. And our team would need to know exactly what the treatment included, so he could simply settle in and enjoy it.
That was the nudge I needed to make a new price list. The herbal treatments would finally have their place, and we would agree on a clear routine with our team so everyone knew what each treatment included.
Working on that led to another question: how many people outside our doors had no idea what they could come in for?
And that was how the idea for BeHappy’s website began.
At the time, I had been feeling rather discouraged, thinking about how much people were cutting back on spending. Then someone walked in hoping to give his dad something more.
He probably has no idea how much that visit changed things here.
He came in to surprise his dad. In the end, he surprised me too.
